Club History

The earliest recorded curling activity in and around the Cornwall area was in the 1850's.  In it's initial stages curling was played on the St-Lawrence river on the bay area between Farlinger's Point and Flanigan's Point, adjacent to the community of Glen Walter.  There was no club facility, but McNairn's Hotel, located approximately where the present day Cornwall Golf and Country Club's 10th green is situated, served for pre and post curling gatherings and refreshments.  In 1882, after thirty years of curling on the river, the curlers built a facility at the northwest corner of First and Augustus Streets.  The Cornwall Curling Club joined the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledoinia Curling Club in 1884, thus this is recognized as the founding date.

In 1908 the curling club was destroyed by fire.  For the next thirty eight years there was no curling facility in Cornwall.  In 1946 a group began curling at the Water Street arena.  In 1948 a 4 sheet curling club was built on the east side of Amelia Street, adjacent to the Water Street arena.  In 1984 the Cornwall Curling Club celebrated the 100th anniversary by hosting the World Junior Championship.

In the mid 1990's curlers recognized that the facility on Amelia Street was in need of major repairs and could not adequately accomodate the numbers who wished to curl.  Therefore the club embarked on a major fundraising campaign resulting in the construction current 6 sheet facility at 220 Water Street near the Civic Complex and Aquatic Centre.  Play began at this curling centre in September 2004.

This brief history was taken from an excellent 1983 Cornwall Curling Club publication entitled "The First 100 Years".
